Today I cut out of work early for a pontoon adventure to Looe key… A protected reef just south of big pine… First, I’m so sad I didn’t have an underwater camera… Tons of fish… Baracuda, parrot fish, a whole gallexy of Nemo and his cousins, shark, lobster, tarpin, grouper… All swimming with us. How amazing! Trevor, Gordon, and Thor couldn’t stand the fact that we couldn’t fish any of them so we went to a few spots on the way home so they could get their spear on… Good times… Then we hung out under the bridge at Bahia Honda as the worms just hatched and watched all of the guys battling tarpin.. again, Gordon and Trevor were very sad to be stuck on a pontoon with no fly rod… Now we’re off to eat a whole bag of Hogfish that met the business end of a spear… Ah the keys…
One thing that really impresses me about the fishing culture down here is the fact they start with little or nothing but wit and experience… Then turn it into a giant fish. For the most part everything that is taken is eaten, except for those that are protected and they are treated with respect… Very good people in this part of the country. They see themselves as conservative, but I see them as people of the land… Utilizing what is local, accessible, and plentiful to survive without ever taking too much… Being symbiotic with the world around them and absolutely loving it!… That is Sustainably Grounded.
